P5 meet Lemony Snicket

Written by Aaron and Morven P5 Friday, 15 January 2010

On Wednesday we went to see Lemony Snicket. His a book author. He is American, which is quite cool. This was his first ever event in Scotland. He has a number of books (13). I thought he was going to be boring but he wasn't, actually he was a bit of a comedian! He played an accordian to us and we had to join in with the song. Aaron P5

We were at the Queen's Hall to meet the author of a Series of Unfortunate Events. Lemony Snicket was not as I expected. He kept on repeating himself and did a dance where he fell on the floor. He said Lemony Snicket was bitten on the armpit by a crocodile then he played the accordian whild singing and told someone to squeeze someone else. He start to read a bit of the book and let people make noises like BOOM and GRRR. I am going to read all 13 of his books now. In the end he ran away, it was really good. Morven P5

Victorian Schoolroom Visit

Written by Kaera Friday, 04 December 2009
victorianschool.jpgOn Thursday 26th Nov. P6 went to the Victorian Schoolroom at Leith Walk Primary. When we got there the girls got changed into pinafores and the boys got changed into shirts and waist coats. Then we went into the classroom. The desk and seats were different from the ones we use now and the teachers were very strict. We had to sit up very straight and keep our feet together. When we were seated we did the 5 times table up to 12 mentally. Then we did some more maths on a slate board with a slate pencil. It was hard to write with and made a horrible noise. After we did writing with ink pens with a sharp point and dipped the ink pen in the ink well in the desk. Then we heard about Jet, a shiny black stone Queen Victoria wore. The teacher asked lots of questions about Queen Victoria and as we knew nearly all the answers she was very pleased. When we had finished in the classroom we went through to the Victorian Museum. The teacher told us about Victorian life at home and showed us some of the things they used in the kitchen, the bedroom and on wash day. I got to turn a mangle and try on a corset!. Last of all we got to play with some Victorian toys for 10 minutes. At the end we got changed out of our Victorian clothes and walked back to our own school. I thought the trip was fantastic and we learnt lots. Kaera

Pupil Councillors have been talking about things to make the school better. We have already come up with some ideas like getting water fountains in the girls toilets fixed and getting new equipment and flowers for the big playground. Next week we are going to discuss with our classes about having suggestion boxes, the L Factor and how to help make new friends in the playground. By Ross, Jamie and Fraser.
